CETAG Suggests What Could Make Them End Their Destiny Strike

On the 14th of June 2024, CETAG declared an indefinite strike action to embark on a journey to claim what is right to them. There have been several attempts to get their employer to honor the arbitration awards which was under the directive of the NLC.

Their legal actions against their employer to implement the awards were not fruitful. This has resulted in one of the longest strike actions by CETAG which comes with careful preparation and a common decision. CETAG has lost faith in their employer, with fears that even if legal actions are taken for them to return to the lecture halls, their employer will fail to honor the awards.

In light of this, CETAG stands firm against any intimidation that they will not return to the lecture halls unless their employer implements everything in the arbitration awards.

In recent developments, there have been engagements between CETAG and stakeholders which yielded positive results till they signed MoA/MoU which did not meet their expectations. The focus of the CETAG strike is the arbitration awards.

CETAG after carefully scrutinizing the MoA/MoU, the national council has made it clear that it has not met their expectations and that what they are fighting for is not captured in the MoA/MoU. They also stated that, in all previous engagements, NLC was supposed to be a supervising body but was not present in any of the engagements.

Also, GTEC stated that CETAG strike action is illegal hence CETAG members’ July salaries should be frozen by the CAGD, which CETAG termed as a BAD FAITH exhibited.

Based on the ongoing strike action, CETAG has suggested that if their employer can comply with the following, CETAG National Council may decide to call off the strike action.

  1. Their employer should through GTEC write to the CAGD to de-freeze CETAG members’ July salaries immediately.
  2. NLC should be made to discontinue any court action against the union and agree to meet the parties to witness the signing of any future MoA/MoU that shall take into consideration all concerns of CETAG.
  3. CETAG requests for the payment of arrears which shall accrue from the migration to be paid between September and November 2024 after the migration exercise is completed ending August 2024.
  4. CETAG should be given concrete evidence of the migration and payment of all the outstanding allowances owed to members before a decision could be taken to call off the strike action.

The ongoing strike action has affected teacher trainees in all the 46 public colleges of education in the country. It is every trainee’s hope and prayer that CETAG’s employer will consider these suggestions for CETAG to call off the strike action.
