Guidelines and the Requirements Needed to Apply for a Passport in Ghana
In this post, we will give you the guidelines and the requirements needed to apply for a passport in Ghana. Passport application can be done by all individuals provided you are a Ghanaian.
Applicants could be applying for any of the stated below:
- New Application (First-time applicants)
- Renewal of passports
- Replacing missing Passports
- Damaged Passports
- Change of Name
In all of the cases provided above, we have given the requirements for each below. But before that, let us see the types and cost of the passports. The cost of a passport depends on the type and the pages in it.
New Addition to the Ghana Passport:
- Chip-Embedded Passport: Ghana will no longer issue the old biometric passports. All new issuances will have superior chip-embedded technology;
- 24-Hour Operations: The Passport Head Office would now open around the clock to better assist citizens;
- Courier Delivery: Ghana Post and Troskit would deliver passport to Ghanaians everywhere;,
- E-Tracking System: Applicants can trace the status of their passport applications from submission to delivery;
- Faster Turnaround Time: Regular applications will be handled in 15 working days, while expedited services will take only 5 working days;
- Reduced Application Fees: Cabinet and the parliament has approved the reduction of application fees from GHS500 to GHS350.
- Ghana is meeting the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) requirements with the new security-enhanced chip-embedded passports. According to the ICAO, current passports will be outdated by 2030.
First Time Applicants
What you need to apply for the passport.
Scan and attach the following:
- Birth Certificate(Proof of Ghanaian citizenship)
- Documents to support Identity such as Driver’s Licence, National ID card
- Proof of Profession (An introductory letter from the applicant’s employer that is if the applicant is currently employed or a work ID card that bears the applicant’s name, organization’s name, and position. A student ID if the applicant is currently in school. Homemakers/housewives and applicants that are unemployed and those in the non-formal sector of employment like mechanics, hairdressers seamstresses, traders, etc. do not need proof. Registered Business Owners and self-employed applicants must produce their business registration certificate as proof)
Renewal
What you need to apply for the passport.
For The Biometric Passport
Scan and attach the following:
- First page and bio-data page with picture and information page
- Valid Visa if the applicant has any in Old Passport
- Last page
- Proof of Profession if changed
For The Black Book/Machine Readable Passports
Scan and attach the following:
- First page (Coat of Arms and Director’s signature)
- Biodata page with picture and information
- Valid Visa if the applicant has any in Old Passport
- Profession page
- Proof of Profession if changed
Missing Passport
What you need to apply for the passport.
Scan and attach the following:
- Police Report
- Affidavit
- Proof of Identity
- Birth Certificate
Damaged Passport
What you need to apply for the passport.
Scan and attach the following:
- Old damaged passport
Change of Name
What you need to apply for the passport.
Scan and attach the following:
- Marriage/Divorce Certificate
- Affidavit
- Gazette
Applicants below 18
What you need to apply for the passport.
Scan and attach the following:
- Birth certificate
- Parents or Guardians ID
